MONTGOMERY, Ala.–In his monthly press briefing Wednesday, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed asked people to continue helping and even to step it up for people who are unable to buy groceries.

The government shutdown may be over soon, but has not ended and SNAP benefits are still not being paid in Alabama.

Reed said around 14 percent of people in the state get SNAP benefits and that many may be in need of help.

He asked that community organizations and food pantry donations continue for people who need help.
