MONTOGOMERY, Ala.–A couple of cold fronts are expected to come through Alabama this weekend, which will drop temperatures into the 40s for highs in the Montgomery area Monday, with lows into the mid to upper 20s.

When it gets that cold the city opens a warming shelter. The city says it’s also a chance for you to help, if you are able.

The following is info from the city:

The City of Montgomery and Emergency Management Agency (EMA) are calling on the community to help care for our most vulnerable neighbors. The Montgomery Warming Center, located at The Crump Center (1751 Cong W L Dickinson Drive), opens its doors when the thermometer drops to 35 degrees or below, offering a warm, safe space for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

The Warming Center provides more than just shelter. Guests are welcomed with snacks, coffee, warm showers, and a safe place to sleep. They can watch TV, enjoy a hot meal, and receive support services including clothing donations and employment resources. For many, it’s a place of dignity, hope, and human connection.

But this mission cannot continue without the help of compassionate volunteers.

How You Can Help

The Warming Center is seeking volunteers to be on call from November through March, especially on nights when temperatures fall below freezing. The first temperature drop and volunteer opportunity may occur as early as Sunday, November 9, with confirmed operations on Monday, November 19, from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

Volunteer roles may include:

  • Welcoming and checking in guests
  • Distributing food, water, and supplies
  • Monitoring the space and ensuring safety
  • Offering a listening ear and a warm smile

If you’re unable to volunteer in person, donations of warm clothing, toiletries, bottled water, and light-prepared packaged meals are deeply appreciated and can be dropped off during operating hours.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • A background check may be required (depending on the role)
  • Willingness to follow safety guidelines and respect the dignity of all guests
  • A kind heart and a commitment to serving others

“The Warming Center is more than a shelter—it’s a lifeline,” said Adena Kramer, Grants Coordinator, Department of Economic Development. “Every volunteer, every donation, every act of kindness makes a difference. Together, we can ensure that no one in Montgomery faces the cold alone.”
