MONTGOMERY, Ala.–Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama and the Alabama State Medical Association say they have reached some agreement on changes to health care coverage in the state and that includes a promise to never use AI in the decision-making process.
Both entities promise that AI has not been used in prior authorization, or the decision process is deciding if a medication is medically appropriate, and that it will never be used.
If you have chronic conditions, the company says it will not require repeated prior authorizations for the meds. If you are on an approved medication or service the company says they will not suddenly take it away.
Some of the prior authorizations will be completed electronically.
If you switch Blue Cross coverage plans, your medication will still be available for 90s days.
“This is about putting patients first,” said the two organizations in a joint statement. “We are confident these enhancements will lead to better outcomes and less frustration for everyone involved.”
