Governor Ivey Highlights Statewide School Choice Opportunities as Alabama’s Specialty Schools Open Admission
MONTGOMERY – Governor Kay Ivey on Monday announced that all four of Alabama’s specialty public high schools have opened their admissions portals for the 2027-28 academic year and encouraged Alabama families to explore these unique educational opportunities and apply.
These state-funded, tuition-free schools serve students from all 67 counties, offering specialized academic programs and residential opportunities that allow students to pursue their interests regardless of where they live.
“Alabama’s future is sitting in our classrooms today, and I intend to make sure it is a bright one. Our next generation of artists, scientists, engineers and healthcare professionals deserve every opportunity to succeed,” said Governor Ivey. “Our four specialty schools offer yet another quality option for families in all 67 counties, allowing our students to pursue their passions and turn their God-given talents into promising careers.”
Governor Ivey has championed the expansion of specialty education in Alabama, signing legislation to establish the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering in 2018 and the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences in 2024. Most recently, in April 2026, Governor Ivey signed Senate Joint Resolution 84, encouraging greater collaboration, partnerships and information sharing among the four institutions. School administrators held their first joint meeting in August.
