City Looking at Vicious Dogs and Possibly Updating Ordinances

MONTGOMERY, Ala.–A series of complaints about vicious dogs and a recent attack have some members of the Montgomery City Council considering whether to update the city’s ordinances to deal more efficiently with wayward animals.

As it stands the city rules follow state law, which provides a legal way for authorities to deal with dogs that attack someone without provocation. The state law is called “Emily’s Law” after someone who was mauled and killed in a dog attack in 2017.

The council has had two discussions so far this month about vicious dogs, the most recent being Tuesday night.

What you might expect from the council are rules that more specifically determine what a “vicious” dog is and the legal process for dealing with animals involved in an attack.

The council is looking over the current ordinance to see what they believe can be improved.
