MONTGOMERY, Ala.–You may be affected by some of the proposed changes being offered by the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, at the request of Gov. Kay Ivey.
The proposed changes are in response to a shooting in downtown Montgomery Oct. 4, where two people were killed and 12 others were hurt.
One of the proposals, which were outlined in a letter from the ABC to the governor, include keeping liquor stores in entertainment districts from selling items that may encourage off-premises drinking, like cups and ice.
The ABC Board has also proposed curfews for minors in areas where events happen regularly, which would have to be approved by local communities or state lawmakers.
The Board also proposes limiting alcohol giveaways in those entertainment districts.
The governor responded with the following statement:
“Public safety is paramount, and the state will continue being proactive to ensure safe communities for our citizens. I appreciate Administrator Stewart evaluating how we can take commonsense steps when it comes to alcohol consumption in entertainment districts across our state. I support the immediate steps he is proposing the ABC Board take, and I look forward to further exploring possible reasonable policy changes to enhance public safety.”
